HOLBROOK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — It has been a full week of rude awakenings for a Long Island couple, who said their home has been under siege by a group of birds slamming into their windows over and over again. As CBS 2’s Elise Finch reported Monday, the problem that Peter and Lisa Kersich of Holbrook have been experiencing is common at this time of year. The loud thumps have been waking them up morning after morning. “Boom, boom, boom – that’s what it sounds like,” said Peter Kersich. “It’s a pretty good hit on the window,” said Lisa Kersich. The thumping started around 6 a.m. one morning and continued throughout the day. The couple sat by their window until they caught the culprits in the act. It turned out it was a small group of robins flying headfirst into their windows.“Just right into the window, full steam ahead,” Lisa Kersich said. “We don’t know how he’s not getting hurt,” Peter Kersich said. Experts said at this time of year, the Tri-State Area serves as a resting point for thousands of migrating birds and some of them are easily confused by things like windows. “New York City Audubon estimates that 90,000 birds die each year in New York City alone,” said licensed wildlife rehabilitator Rita McMahon, of the Wild Bird Fund Inc. McMahon said reflective surfaces confuse birds. They either view them as more clear spaces and fly into them, or they see their own reflection and think they are seeing another bird – one they want to fight and chase away. McMahon said if the birds are bothering you, you should put bird-shaped decals on your windows, place strips of shiny material such as Mylar across your windows, or do the same with Saran wrap. “Whatever they can do to stop the mirror image of what’s out there will then tell the bird, ‘No, I’m not continuing in the same vein,’” McMahon said. Peter and Lisa Kersich said at this point, they will try almost anything to keep the birds from hurting themselves and depriving them of precious sleep. In one piece of good news, the spring migration ends in three weeks, so confused migratory birds should soon be gone.

The images emerged from Arkansas as another series of tornadoes hit Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee on Monday night, part of a powerful storm system that has threatened large areas of the South with more twisters, severe thunderstorms, damaging hail and flash floods, authorities said. As the storm swept across a large part of the U.S., the overall death toll was at least 28, with 11 killed in the South on Monday and 17 in the central region on Sunday. At least 16 people have died after a powerful storm system spawning several tornadoes tore through the central and southern states last night with experts warning that another hundred are set to hit the central states this week at the start of tornado season. Winds ripped houses off their foundations and flipped cars on top of the rubble in the small town of Vilonia in central Arkansas' Faulkner county, one of the worst-hit communities. Early this morning Arkansas Department of Emergency Management announced the death toll stating the deadly weather had killed seven people in Faulkner County, five people in Pulaski County and one person in White County. Tornado watches - which means twisters could develop but are not an immediate threat - are in effect for states as far west as New Mexico and as far east as Tennessee and the system produced storms that were moving through the region in waves. Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Flooding caused by heavy rains killed at least 102 people in three provinces of northern Afghanistan, disaster officials said Friday. Dozens are still missing after the flooding Thursday night in Jawzjan, Faryab and Sar-e-Pul provinces, Afghanistan's Natural Disaster Management Agency said. In Jawzjan province, more than 100 people have been injured and over 30 villages remain underwater, said Gen. Faqir Mohammad, the local police chief. He warned that the number of casualties may rise as the flooding continues. In Faryab province, flooding has killed 40 people, injured dozens and left 10,000 domestic animals dead, deputy provincial governor Abdulsatar Barez said. Witnesses reported seeing people climbing trees to save themselves from the rising water.

22 April 2014 (ACT) Minister of Interior, Deputy Prime Minister Gabriel Oprea, on Monday stated that four of the persons who went missing in the areas hit by the recent floods were found dead and also that the number of localities affected decreased from 86 down to 35 in the past few hours. 'It is unfortunate that, following voluntary actions, people lost their lives, after they ignored the big risks they were facing, but also the warnings of the authorities and locals. Among the people who were initially declared missing, following the extended search missions that we conducted, four were found dead, which is very unfortunate, ' said Oprea at the emergency task force meeting at the headquarter of the MAI (Ministry of Administration and Interior), in which participated including Prime Minister Victor Ponta. Moreover, Oprea announced that 'the number of localities affected by the floods dropped from 86 down to 35, in part because due to the improved weather conditions, but also as a result of the interventions conducted this morning by the teams of firefighters, policemen, gendarmes and border policemen. According to the Deputy prime Minister, the MAI has more than 1,500 people deployed right now in the counties hit by the floods, with 'their main mission being to support the population [...] and the communities to return to normality.' Conakry (AFP) - Five women and two girls have been killed in a landslide at a goldmine in northeastern Guinea, police said on Wednesday. The collapse happened on Tuesday in Kintinian, a settlement by Siguiri, a city on the Niger river near the border with Mali. "The collapse of the mine, which also wounded at least eight people, including two seriously, occurred... at dawn in a goldmine frequented by illegal miners who don't think twice about going into deep shafts that only they know and which can be up to 100 metres (330 feet) long," a policeman said on condition of anonymity. He said authorities had shut the mine several times after discovering non-licensed miners working in its shafts. Guinea sits atop huge deposits of gold, bauxite and diamond but the majority of its people live in poverty and unregulated and dangerous artisanal mining by individuals is commonplace. Around 20 miners were killed in a landslide at a goldmine in Siguiri in November last year, and another eight were killed in the eastern town of Mandiana in March. "Over the past five years there have been at least seven accidents like this which have left at least 46 people dead," said Siguiri resident Mamadou Diawara, who saw the collapse. Police said artisanal mining had been banned in the area since 2012 and they were investigating a Guinean mining company over the incident.

A sudden lurch in a creeping landslide in the northwest Wyoming resort town of Jackson split a house in two and forced workers to abandon just-begun efforts to stabilize the hillside. A huge crack in the ground that had opened up under the house a couple weeks ago shifted several feet downhill in less than a day, breaking off a room or two and leaving a door swinging above the precipice. Rocks and dirt tumbled down in an almost constant stream and a geologist warned much bigger chunks could fall. The ground had been moving at a rate of an inch a day. 19 Apr 2014 Heavy rains have caused a huge sinkhole to spring up between two homes in central Florida, growing to more than 25 feet across. The owners of one of the homes on Chalmer Terrace in the Villages, Florida called repair crews out a few months ago when they noticed a small hole. That hole was originally filled with grout, and the house secured to limestone underneath with steel pinnings, but weather over the weekend caused the sinkhole to return Saturday. The hole now threatens the home next door after growing to more than 25 feet across and 50 feet deep. The home next door doesn't have steel underpinnings which authorities feel may compromise the building. Luckily both homes are currently vacant. The Cyclone WARNING has been extended south and is now current for coastal areas from Cape Tribulation to Yeppoon.

At 6:00 am EST Tropical Cyclone Ita, Category 1, was estimated to be
50 kilometres southeast of Cardwell and
90 kilometres north northwest of Townsville, and
moving south southeast at 19 kilometres per hour.

Tropical Cyclone Ita is forecast to move to the southeast during the next 24 hours, most likely close to or just offshore of the southern tropical and central coast, and is expected to maintain tropical cyclone intensity.

GALES with gusts to 100 kilometres per hour are likely between Port Douglas and Mackay today. Gales may extend further down the coast to St Lawrence later today, and to Yeppoon early Monday, if the system moves offshore.

As the cyclone tracks near the coast abnormally high tides are expected between Cardwell and Mackay, but the sea level should not exceed the highest tide of the year. Large waves are likely along the beachfront.

Although the chances of finding more survivors appeared remote, officials said on Sunday they could not give up hope. "We had one father who had been separated from his wife and children for two days and we were able to track the family down," Red Cross aid worker Cherise Chadwick said.The death toll was put at 21, with aid agencies saying up to 40 people remained unaccounted for and about 49,000 had been displaced. A man-eating crocodile suspected of killing at least six people has been captured off the shores of Lake Victoria in Uganda. The enormous beast, over 18ft long and weighing approximately a tonne, was caught after worried locals demanded wildlife officials hunt it down. Its latest victim is believed to be father-of-two Bosco Nyansi, a local fisherman whose tattered clothing was discovered floating on the water.No other trace of Mr Nyansi has been found and friends say he was mauled by the beast. Fans at a north Texas baseball game seemed ready to brave the weather on Thursday -- despite a looming tornado seen behind the stadium's left-field wall. The Frisco RoughRiders were scheduled to play the Northwest Arkansas Naturals on Thursday. The dangerous weather forced a postponement, MLB reports, with the score tied at 2-2 in the game's third inning. Strangely, the RoughRiders' website lists the reason for the cancellation as 'rain.' The makeup game against the Naturals is set to take place on Friday night. Nearby Denton, Texas was battered with baseball-sized hail as a large swath of the central U.S. experienced severe storms and tornado warnings. Severe weather warnings were issued from the Southern Plains into the Midwest Thursday evening in a system expected to stretch into Friday morning. Denton, located 40 miles north of Dallas, was hit the hardest after experiencing two monster hail storms Thursday. The first shower hit around 4pm and produced baseball-sized hail which caused damage to cars and buildings. The parking lot at Strickland Middle School in north Denton looked 'like a war zone' after the first round of hail while the fields at nearby Texas Women's University were turned completely white. This is the scene of devastation caused by fires which ravaged more than a thousand homes as they swept across slums in Manila in the Philippines leaving hundreds of families homeless in a single night. Families caught in the blazes can be seen sitting inside the rubble of their gutted homes with nothing left but scraps of metal and charred possessions. One fire was started by a lit candle in the house of Tisay Mohammad at Isla Verde in his house in Boulevard village, while another started in a shantytown in Punta, Sta. Ana, destroying at least 1000 homes and displacing hundreds of families. The fires were thought to have spread very quickly because many houses in Manila are made of wood, and are built very close together, making them an incredibly flammable fire risk. Miraculously, there have been no reported casualties among the districts affected by the fires, as hundreds of people who were affected were evacuated to Quezon Elementary School. The violence took place in the southern town of Macenta, where at least 14 people have died since the outbreak emerged last month. The mob of people who descended upon the clinic accused Doctors Without Borders health workers of bringing Ebola to Guinea, where there had never previously been any cases.Guinea's government swiftly condemned the attack, saying that Doctors Without Borders and other international aid groups were key to stopping the spread of Ebola. "The international community has rapidly mobilized to help us in these difficult moments with considerable medical support and specialists on the ground at the disease's epicenter," the statement said. "That's why the government is calling on people to stay calm and allow our partners to help us eradicate this epidemic." 3 Apr 2014 (CNN) -The death toll from an Ebola outbreak in coastal West Africa has risen to 86, with dozens more ill, aid workers reported Friday. The deaths are among the 137 cases reported by the World Health Organization, which said the outbreak has "rapidly evolved" since originating in the forests of southeastern Guinea. The city of Guekedou, near the borders with Sierra Leone and Liberia, has seen the majority of the deaths. Five people are believed to have died in Guinea's capital, Conakry, according to WHO. Two of the victims had traveled to the region. It's the first emergence of Ebola in western Africa, and WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said the U.N. agency is trying to track people who had encountered the victims and make sure "that all those who have been in contact with infected people are being checked upon.""What is really important is to inform the population of Guinea and Conakry about this disease, as this is the first time they are facing Ebola. They need to know what it is and how they can protect themselves." In Liberia, seven Ebola deaths have been confirmed out of 14 suspected cases. Sierra Leone is investigating at least two deaths. Chile has declared a state of emergency after a magnitude-8.2 earthquake struck off its northern coast, setting off a tsunami that forced evacuations across the country. Saudi Arabia has announced the suspension of visas for Muslim pilgrims from Guinea and Liberia, two countries hit by an outbreak of the deadly Ebola epidemic. The Saudi health ministry recommended the measure "due to the danger of the disease and its highly contagious" nature, the state news agency SPA reported. The World Health Organisation has said it is not recommending travel or trade restrictions to Guinea, Liberia or Sierra Leone, which has reported suspected cases of Ebola, based on information currently available. Muslims perform the hajj pilgrimage to the Saudi city of Mecca once a year, but they can make the minor umrah pilgrimage to the kingdom all year round.
