Massive swarms of bugs are invading the World Cup ahead of England-Tunisia in Volgograd

Flies and mosquitos are running rampant in the Russian city of Volgograd ahead of Monday's World Cup clash between England and Tunisia. Helicopters have been deployed to spray insecticide on the Volgograd Arena, which will host four games over the course of the tournament. Volgograd – formerly Stalingrad – sits along the Volga River in the southwest part of the country. The stadium itself is right on the bank of the river, which many fear could mean the bug problem will be even worse than in other parts of the city. English press and fans have taken to Twitter to voice the seriousness of the problem. The swarms of bugs have caused some broadcasters to cancel live shots and are wreaking havoc in the city's fan zones. Source

LA CUMBRE volcano on Fernandina Island in the Galapagos erupted violently on Saturday, causing a large plume of smoke, ash, and flows of magma across the island. But where are the Galapagos Islands?  Erupting between 11.00am and 11.15am (6.00pm and 6.15pm BST) on Saturday, June 16, La Cumbre spewed clouds of gas and smoke into the air.   La Cumber measures 4,852 feet high and is the most active volcano on the Galapagos Islands.  Similar to Hawaii’s Kilauea, La Cumbre is a shield volcano, made up of almost entirely lava flows.  Before the eruption, nine earthquakes had shaken Fernandina Island ranging from 2.5 magnitudes to 4.1 magnitudes according to the Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic School.

The last time La Cumbre, (also known as Fernandina volcano) erupted was September 2017, which occurred after eight years of superficial calm.  Galapagos Park Director Jorge Carrion released a statement confirming there are no human settlements in the area where the eruption has taken place.   There is also no plan to evacuate animals as what has occurred has been a natural event says, Director Carrion.  He said: "There are some species that could be affected, however, being a flow (of lava) that is in only one direction, on only one side of the island, the possible impacts that there would be would not have a significant impact on biodiversity.  Source

THE Hawaii volcano eruption has triggered a shock event that has left experts baffled, with one meteorologist admitting he has "never seen this before," after the explosive lava caused a winter freeze blast. Flash Flooding causes 60 sinkholes in Michigan

HOUGHTON, MI (WLUC) - Houghton County residents face flash flooding, massive washouts and sink holes, all the aftermath of a major thunderstorm that hit overnight. Chassell, Houghton, Ripley, Lake Linden, Hubbell and more all face major flood damage. More than 60 sinkholes and washouts are reported. Locals are saying they have never seen anything like this here before. "I'm a little shocked that it actually happened around here. Not many tornadoes or anything like that happen here," said Calumet resident Farrah Wood. The river from Huron Lake to the Portage Canal washed out a major section between Razorback Drive and Ridge Road in Houghton. The culvert under Sharon Avenue and large sections of the road were also washed away. Water undercut foundations of several businesses including a car wash and AAA Copper Country Insurance Agency. The Taco Bell Drive thru and sign washed into the river. "This morning when I got a call from my mom that the road by my parents' house was kind of caved in. And then I saw a bunch of pictures on Facebook and live videos that Taco Bell's sign was down and that the whole valley between it was covered in water," said Wood. Source

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A 7-meter-long (23-foot-long) python has swallowed a woman in central Indonesia, a village official said Saturday. The victim, 54-year-old Wa Tiba, went missing while checking her vegetable garden near her village on Muna island in Southeast Sulawesi province on Thursday evening, according to the village chief, Faris. On Friday, her family went to look for her at the garden but found only her belongings, including sandals and a flashlight, said Faris, who uses a single name. The family and villagers launched a search for the woman, and found the snake with a bloated belly about 50 meters (yards) from where her belongings were found. The villagers killed the snake and carried it to the village. "When they cut open the snake's belly they found Tiba's body still intact with all her clothes," Faris said. "She was swallowed first from her head." Videos posted on some websites showed villagers slicing open the python's carcass to reveal the woman's body. Faris said the victim's garden, about 1 kilometer (half a mile) from her house, is located in a rocky area with caves and cliffs believed to contain many snakes. Reticulated pythons, which are widespread in Indonesia and other parts of Southeast Asia, grab onto their prey with dozens of sharp curved teeth and then squeeze it to death before swallowing it whole. Reports of humans being killed by pythons are extremely rare. In the wild they are known to eat monkeys, pigs and other mammals. It was the second python attack on a human in Indonesia since March last year, when a 25-year-old man was swallowed whole by a python in West Sulawesi province. Source

It's raining octopus! Sea creatures fall from the sky after being 'sucked from the ocean by a waterspout and carried into coastal city' during powerful storm in China 

Incredible photos have emerged from China that show octopus and other sea creatures raining from the sky after being sucked out of the ocean by a violent storm. The images were taken in the coastal city of Qingdao in eastern China's Shandong Province on Wednesday. Although the images may seem unlikely, fish can be sucked from the sea by tornado-strength winds which form a waterspout. The animals sucked up with the water can be deposited hundreds of yards or even miles away after being released by the wind. Recent examples of the phenomenon include a 2017 incident in Mexico in when fish rained from the sky in the town of Tampico, and a downpour of fish in the town of Kerala, India in 2008. Source

What weather phenomenon could have made it rain octopus in China?

This strange weather incident is believed to occur after tornadoes over water - called waterspouts - suck fish or other animals into the air.

They are blown around until windspeeds slow enough to release them to the ground.

An arm has been found inside the body of an alligator which is believed to have dragged a woman to her death this morning while she was out walking her dogs. Park rangers eventually captured the enormous alligator at Silver Lakes Rotary Park in Davie, Florida, on Friday afternoon after spending hours searching for it in the large pond. When they cut it open, they discovered a human arm. They were called to the scene at 9.45am amid reports that Shizuka Matsuki, 46, had been dragged in to the water. She was out walking her dogs, one of which was found by the side of the water with a large, fresh wound on its coat when authorities arrived. Source

A woman has been gored by a bison at a national park in the US. Kim Hancock, 59, had been with a group of tourists at the famous Yellowstone National Park on Wednesday when she got too close to the animal, park officials said. She had been part of a crowd that got to within 10 yards of the animal while making their way along a boardwalk. The bull bison "became agitated and charged the crowd before immediately leaving the area". Ms Hancock, from Santa Rosa, California, was taken to a hospital in Montana with a hip injury. She was reportedly in a good condition. This is the second bison attack in the park this year. On 1 May, a woman from Idaho was slightly injured as she walked on a trail in the park. The two women were among four people injured by various types of wildlife in the park in just over a month. Another two women were injured by elks over a three-day period - and one of them was seriously hurt. Source

Act of god! Landslide tumbles down Italian mountainside but STOPS yards short of 420-year-old church

A 420-year-old church had a miraculous escape when a landslide stopped just yards away. In the clip, the landslide approaches the Santuario di Gallivaggio in Valle Spluga in Italy near the Swiss border before suddenly stopping. The belltower was engulfed in dust after the rocks fell from the cliff face on May 29.Local news website Avvenire reported that the landslide happened after the town experienced 60millimeters of rain in just 24 hours.Around 7,500 cubic meters of rock fell in the landslide, but remarkably nobody was hurt. Parish priest Don Andrea Caelli told Avvenire: 'As a believer I say that the provident hand of God accompanied this event which could have ended tragically.' Roads to the town had been closed for more than a month after forecasters predicted the landslide. The roads have now reopened and there was no significant damage to the church, which was built on the site where two young girls claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary in 1492. Source

A crocodile has killed a Protestant pastor who was baptising followers near a lake in southern Ethiopia. Docho Eshete was conducting the ceremony for about 80 people on Sunday morning at Lake Abaya in Arba Minch town's Merkeb Tabya district. Residents and police told BBC Amharic a crocodile leapt from the water during the baptism and attacked him. Pastor Docho died after being bitten on his legs, back and hands. "He baptised the first person and he passed on to another one. All of a sudden, a crocodile jumped out of the lake and grabbed the pastor," local resident Ketema Kairo told the BBC. Despite huge efforts, fishermen and residents could not save pastor Docho, policeman Eiwnetu Kanko said. They used fishing nets to prevent the crocodile from taking the pastor's body into the lake. Guatemala's Fuego volcano eruption kills 25, injures hundreds

GUATEMALA CITY, June 3 (Reuters) - An estimated 25 people, including at least three children, were killed and nearly 300 injured on Sunday in the most violent eruption of Guatemala's Fuego volcano in more than four decades, officials said. Volcan de Fuego, whose name means "Volcano of Fire", spewed an 8-kilometer (5-mile) stream of red hot lava and belched a thick plume of black smoke and ash that rained onto the capital and other regions. The charred bodies of victims laid on the steaming, ashen remnants of a pyroclastic flow as rescuers attended to badly injured victims in the aftermath of the eruption. It was the 3,763-meter (12,346-feet) volcano's second eruption this year. "It's a river of lava that overflowed its banks and affected the El Rodeo village. There are injured, burned and dead people," Sergio Cabanas, the general secretary of Guatemala's CONRED national disaster management agency, said on radio. CONRED said the number of dead had risen to 25, from an earlier estimate of seven, including a CONRED employee. Some 3,100 people have been evacuated from the area. Officials said the dead were so far all concentrated in three towns: El Rodeo, Alotenango and San Miguel los Lotes. Source
