Laura to unleash devastating blow to Gulf Coast as major hurricane

Hurricane Laura continued intensifying by the hour overnight and Wednesday morning, becoming the first major hurricane of the 2020 Atlantic season. As the storm begins bearing down on the United States, scattering nearly 600,000 residents from coastal communities around Texas and Louisiana, experts are warning of the potentially devastating storm surge and destructive winds that Laura’s wrath may pack.

After being upgraded from a Tropical Storm to a Category 1 hurricane on Tuesday, Laura’s strength grew rapidly from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning as it now packs 125-mph winds, and is a Category 3 storm. The eye of Laura was 235 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas, as of 10 a.m. CDT, Wednesday, and was moving northwest at 16 mph.

Forecasters expect Laura to make landfall near the Texas-Louisiana border as a Category 3 hurricane, but is expected to reach Category 4 strength (winds of 130 to 156 mph) -- and perhaps even Category 5 strength (wind speeds of 157 mph or greater) -- for a time as it moves over bath warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico. It is then predicted to weaken slightly back to a Category 3 storm just before landfall late Wednesday night. Source

In just a week, wildfires burn 1 million acres in California

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Weary firefighters in California raced Saturday to slow the spread of wildfires that burned nearly one million acres statewide in a week and destroyed hundreds of homes ahead an expected weather change that could bring more lightning strikes like the ones that sparked many of the blazes.

Responding to the emergency, President Donald Trump issued a major disaster declaration to provide federal assistance. Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement that the declaration will also help people in counties affected by the fires with crisis counseling, housing and other social services.

Two clusters of wildfires in the San Francisco Bay Area grew to become the second- and third-largest wildfires in recent state history by size. Light winds and cooler and more humid nighttime weather helped fire crews make progress on those fires and a third group of fires south of San Francisco ahead of the forecast of warm, dry weather, erratic wind gusts and lightning, state fire officials said.

The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning of high fire danger across the Bay Area and along the Central Coast, beginning from Sunday morning to Monday afternoon.

“The worst is not behind us. We are in a battle rhythm,” California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) Chief Thom Porter tweeted.

Since thousands of lightning strikes began on Aug. 15, the state reported 585 wildfires that have burned nearly a million acres, or 1,562 square miles (4,046 square kilometers), according to Cal Fire.

Many were small and remote. The bulk of damage was from three fire “complexes” that were ravaging forest and rural areas in and around the San Francisco Bay Area. They have burned 1,045 square miles (2,700 square kilometers). The fires have killed five people, torched nearly 700 homes and other structures and forced tens of thousands from their houses.

“Tuesday night when I went to bed I had a beautiful home on a beautiful ranch,” said 81-year-old Hank Hanson of Vacaville. “By Wednesday night, I have nothing but a bunch of ashes.”

In Santa Cruz County, the fire was threatening Boulder Creek, an old logging community of about 5,000 in the Santa Cruz Mountains on the edge of California’s oldest state park -- Big Basin Redwoods. Fire officials said they expected the blaze to reach the community, but they took advantage of recent good weather to try to “herd” flames around the town.

Earlier in the week, fire officials in charge of each of the three major wildfires said they were strapped for resources. Some firefighters were working 72-hour shifts instead of the usual 24 hours. By Friday, the approximately 13,700 firefighters on the line began to get help on the ground and with aircraft from 10 states, along with the National Guard and U.S. military. Source

​EL DORADO COUNTY RESIDENT TESTS POSITIVE FOR PLAGUE 

(South Lake Tahoe, CA) - El Dorado County health officials have been notified by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) that a South Lake Tahoe resident has tested positive for plague. The individual is currently under the care of a medical professional and is recovering at home. It's believed that the person, an avid walker, may have been bitten by an infected flea while walking their dog along the Truckee River Corridor north of Highway 50 or the Tahoe Keys area in South Lake Tahoe. Health officials are investigating the situation.

According to El Dorado County Public Health Officer, Dr. Nancy Williams, "Plague is naturally present in many parts of California, including higher elevation areas of El Dorado County. It's important that individuals take precautions for themselves and their pets when outdoors, especially while walking, hiking and/or camping in areas where wild rodents are present. Human cases of plague are extremely rare but can be very serious." Several areas of South Lake Tahoe have signs posted to advise the public of the presence of plague and ways to prevent exposure.

Plague is caused by the bacterium, Yersinia pestis. Plague bacteria are most often transmitted by the bites of fleas that have acquired the bacteria from infected squirrels, chipmunks and other wild rodents. Dogs and cats may also bring plague-infected fleas into the home. People can get plague when they are bitten by infected fleas. Plague can be prevented by avoiding contact with wild rodents, and by keeping pets away from rodent burrows.

Symptoms of plague usually show up within two weeks of exposure to an infected animal or flea and include fever, nausea, weakness and swollen lymph nodes. Plague can be effectively treated with antibiotics if detected early.

CDPH routinely monitors rodent populations for plague activity in California and closely coordinates with county health officials. Surveillance activities in El Dorado County from 2016 to 2019 found a total of 20 rodents (ground squirrels or chipmunks) with evidence of exposure to the plague bacterium. These rodents were identified in the South Lake Tahoe area, at or near the Tallac Historic Site, Fallen Leaf Campground and/or Taylor Creek Visitor Center. There were no recent reports of plague-associated illness to people in El Dorado County prior to the current case. The last reported cases of plague in California were two human cases which were exposed to infected rodents or their fleas in Yosemite National Park in 2015. Both people were treated and recovered. China seals off village after bubonic plague death in Inner Mongolia

(CNN)Authorities in the Chinese region of Inner Mongolia have sealed off a village after a resident there died from bubonic plague, a centuries-old disease responsible for the most deadly pandemic in human history. The death was reported to health authorities in Baotou city on Sunday and the victim was confirmed to be a bubonic plague patient on Thursday, the Baotou Municipal Health Commission said in a statement on its website. The patient died of circulatory system failure, according to the statement. It did not mention how the patient had caught the plague. To curb the spread of the disease, authorities sealed off Suji Xincun village, where the dead patient lived, and ordered daily disinfection of homes. All villagers have so far tested negative for the disease, the statement said.Nine close contacts and 26 secondary contacts of the patient have been quarantined and tested negative, the commission said. Damao Banner, the district where the village is located, has been put on Level 3 alert for plague prevention, the second lowest in a four-level system, until the end of the year. The “Flat Corn” Derecho of August 10, 2020

Thunderstorms formed in South Central North Dakota just north of the South Dakota border around 3 am on Monday, August 10, 2020. The storm line moved southeast across South Dakota, producing hail to 3″ in diameter and wind gusts as high as 73 mph. The storms continued southeast into far eastern Nebraska, then turned due east (the path shaped like a hockey stick) and moved across Central Iowa (where the strongest winds occurred), Northern Illinois, far southern Wisconsin, then across Lake Michigan into SW Michigan and Indiana. The remnant line weakened as it moved across Michigan. After midnight, the storms had moved through much of W. Ohio and Kentucky.

In Michigan: Generally, from I-94 to the Indiana border, gusts were from 45-70 mph. Much of the area between I-94 and I-96 had gusts of 30-50 mph. Here are some peak gusts from SW Michigan: Benton Harbor 67 mph, St. Joseph 64 mph, Battle Creek 60 mph, Kalamazoo and Jackson 47 mph, Grand Rapids and Lawton 45 mph, S. Haven 43 mph, Lansing 41 mph, Holland 35 mph, Muskegon 33 mph. Wind damage was reported throughout Berrien Co., also at Mattawan, Gobles, Plainwell, Three Rivers and Grand Beach. A viewer send us a picture of a trampoline folded in half by the winds in the Dorr area. Numerous power outages along and south of I-94.

Here’s a time lapse of the drerecho radar. Peak gusts: 112 mph Midway IA, 106 mph Le Grand IA, 100 mph Hiawatha IA, 99 mph Albion IA, 95 mph Marshalltown IA. Significant building damage occurred in Iowa and Illinois. Watch this roof blow off in Chicago. Glad I wasn’t in this truck.

Besides the structural damage, vehicles were flipped on highways, including I-80 and US 30 in Iowa. On US 65, four semis were flipped in a 2 1/2 mile stretch. Both north and southbound lanes of I-35 were blocked by overturned semis. The storm also caused semis to roll over on Highways 17 and 169. Some of those drivers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Source

Power lines in Hidalgo County, Texas got hit by Hurricane Hanna on July 25, throwing the county into darkness. The clip shows the power lines flashing as they were hit leaving local residents in the city of McAllen without power. Local filmer Karl told Newsflare: "On July 25, 2020, at about 9:30 pm CDT, I captured the effects of a strong category 1 tropical cyclone on the electrical power grid as the storm began to intensify.
