A Dozen Dead Whales Have Washed Ashore In The San Francisco Bay Area
The number of dead whales washing ashore in the San Francisco Bay Area this spring continues to climb, with another massive gray whale seen rolling in the surf at Pacifica State Beach on Friday afternoon.The latest—a 47-foot-long adult male—is the 10th gray whose carcass has ended up on Bay Area shores. A pygmy sperm whale and a fin whale also have been found fatally beached.
A cause of death has not been determined, and a necropsy was not performed, although tissue samples of the whale were collected for further study by the California Academy of Sciences. The carcass will be towed to sea.
Ship strikes and malnutrition have been noted in the death of some of the other whales in the area.
Although the number of grays to die this year has been high, Michael Milstein, a spokesman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said that the last few years have also been unusual.
He said 13 gray whales have died this year in California so far. Last year, 18 had died by the end of May. In 2019, the death toll was 34.
In 2019, NOAA began investigating the deaths in earnest, declaring the die-offs an "unusual mortality event."
So far, this year, 70 gray whales have washed up on the beaches and coasts of Mexico, the U.S. and Canada, Milstein said. In 2019, that number was 214, and in 2020, it was 174.
The population is still considered healthy. In 2016, scientists estimated roughly 26,000 whales living off the western edge of North America; they now peg that number at closer to 20,000.
Most gray whales migrate annually from the inlets of Mexico's Baja Peninsula to Arctic feeding grounds in the Bering and Chukchi seas. It is the longest migration among mammals, with a round-trip distance of 12,000 miles. Source

In a follow-up on the leptospirosis situation in New Caledonia, the Department of Health and Social Affairs is now reporting 190 cases including 3 deaths through May 18.This compares with a total of 69 cases in all of 2020.
Leptospirosis is widespread throughout the world, and of which there are several varieties. It is usually contracted during activity in connection with urine-contaminated fresh water or contaminated animals. Incubation, of varying duration, can range from two to twenty-one days.
The most common symptoms are: high fever (usually over 39 ° C), muscle, joint, abdominal pain and severe headache. The disease can get worse a few days after the first signs and spread to the meninges, liver, kidneys, lungs, etc.
Treatment is based on taking antibiotics.
To control and prevent infections, it is necessary to limit the proliferation of rodents. For this, it is recommended to keep food in closed boxes, to eliminate household garbage around homes and to collect fallen fruit from trees.
In the workplace, personal protective equipment (gloves, boots, coveralls or protective clothing, splash goggles, etc.) must be worn.

New Delhi [India], May 28 (ANI): Putting out an official notification, the Delhi government on Thursday declared 'Black Fungus' (Mucormycosis) an epidemic in the national capital.
Lately, the cases of the infection in Delhi have been on the rise.
While on May 21, Delhi had a total of 200 cases of Black Fungus, the number of the infection witnessed a steep rise and reached 620 on May 26.
Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, and Bihar are other states to have declared the infection as an epidemic disease under the Epidemic Disease Act 1897. An award-winning BBC radio presenter died in hospital after suffering blood clots after she received the AstraZeneca vaccine, her family have revealed.
Lisa Shaw, who worked for BBC Newcastle, developed 'severe' headaches a week after having the jab and fell seriously ill a few days later, relatives said in a statement.
Ms Shaw, 44, died at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, on Friday afternoon having been treated in intensive care for blood clots and bleeding. A fact-of-death certificate lists the vaccine as one of the possible factors, but document does not determine a cause of death. It is expected that will only be released following an inquest into her death.
The presenter was not known to have any underlying health problems and her death came as a devastating shock to family and colleagues.
More than 330 cases of a rare clotting disorder have been spotted among 24.2million recipients of the jab — or around one in every 75,000 people. Fifty-eight patients have died. Source

Volcano Erupts Near Congolese City Of Goma; Residents Flee
GOMA, Congo (AP) — Congo’s Mount Nyiragongo erupted for the first time in nearly two decades Saturday, turning the night sky a fiery red and sending lava onto a major highway as panicked residents tried to flee Goma, a city of nearly 2 million.
No evacuation order was given by authorities, and there was no immediate word on any casualties. Witnesses, though, said lava already had engulfed one highway that connects Goma with the city of Beni in North Kivu province.
Mount Nyiragongo’s last eruption, in 2002, left hundreds dead and coated airport runways in lava.
Authorities at the Goma Volcano Observatory initially said it was the nearby Nyamulagira volcano that had erupted, only adding to the confusion. The two volcanos are located about 13 kilometers (8.1 miles) apart.
Volcanologist Charles Balagizi said the observatory’s report was based on the direction in which the lava appeared to be flowing, which was toward Rwanda rather than Goma.
Goma sits along the border between Congo and neighboring Rwanda, and is a regional hub for humanitarian agencies, as well as the U.N. peacekeeping mission known as MONUSCO. Source

The numbers: Consumer prices rose sharply again in April and drove the rate of inflation to the highest level in nearly 13 years, signaling greater stress on the economy as businesses grapple with supply shortages that are raising the cost of many goods and services.
The consumer price index soared 0.8% to match the biggest monthly increase since 2009, the government said Wednesday. Economists polled by Dow Jones and The Wall Street Journal had forecast a milder 0.2% advance.
The rate of inflation over the past year jumped to 4.2% from 2.6% in the prior month — the highest level since 2008. The pace of inflation has surged after years of languishing at unusually low levels largely due to the rapid reopening of the U.S. economy.
Businesses can’t keep up in demand, a problem exacerbated by ongoing bottlenecks in the global trading system tied to the pandemic. Computer chips are especially in short supply and that’s held up production of new autos and other manufactured goods.
Americans are also rushing to dine out, travel or go far away for vacation, activities they shied away from during the pandemic. That’s also driving up prices at popular vacation resorts and other venues where people plan to congregate. Source

When it comes to the political will and leadership needed to drive the world towards a sustainable future, I’m a pessimist. Time and time again, I’ve heard rhetoric from politicians focusing on short-term goals at the expense of planning for the future. In 2021, the mainstream media promote responsible journalism and take a hard line with climate deniers. Many journalists hold governments to account over climate change goals. However, hard scientific data is often still manipulated and cherrypicked by politicians. I’ve spoken to many and liken the experience to walking through treacle.
Does their bland decision-making have to do with the structure of democracy itself, with its short electoral terms and lack of incentives for incumbent politicians to make hard and binding decisions for the decades ahead? As I look around and see New Zealand’s highways, jammed with huge diesel trucks and ever-increasing numbers of petrol-powered SUVs and cars, I feel dread. It doesn’t have to be this way. What is it about living on a finite planet that humans either don’t or won’t understand, after all the studies and warnings show that continuing in this way leads to the inevitable collapse of the planet’s ecosystems? The Gibraltar Massacre
Gibraltar currently has the world’s worst Covid-19 death rate per capita (2791 per million at time of publication). The disaster started on December 12, when an unprecedented surge in cases was witnessed (see graph below). Until that point in time, like in other European countries, Covid cases had been in constant decline for a while. In Gibraltar, numbers of cases had been dropping for almost a month since November 13.
What people do not know is that just a few days before Gibraltar morphed into a Covid killing zone, 273 Spanish key healthcare workers involved with Gibraltar’s elderly and vulnerable populations were reportedly inoculated with the Pfizer vaccine.
Gibraltar Bay radio reported on 7 December 2020, that “More than 9,200 Spanish nationals cross the Gibraltar border to work. Vaccination plans are still being drawn up, but around 273 workers working in care agencies looking after the elderly could become the first Spanish nationals to receive the Pfizer vaccine.“
The Spanish El Pais quotes Antonio Sánchez, a Spanish national and carer for two children with autism at a youth care centre who knew that he would be the amongst the first to receive the vaccine. “I am one of the first. The subcontractor company that I work for has told us that it’s very likely that they will begin vaccinating us next week [the week starting December 7].”
On 8 December elperiodico.com announced that “the Spanish workers in the health and care sector in Gibraltar will be the first in the country to be vaccinated from Tuesday (8 December) against coronavirus, under the Gibraltar Government vaccination program.”
Until now we have looked at Israel as the ultimate testing ground for the Pfizer experiment. As I have been reporting since the beginning of January, the outcome of the Israel/Pfizer experiment has been pretty devastating. Israel’s Covid deaths doubled in just 2 months of vaccinations. The blood of San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples, has NOT liquefied on Saturday in the local cathedral. It is the second time in a row that the miracle didn't take place.
The event is supposed to happen three times a year: on September 19 (Saint Januarius's Day), on December 16 (Saint Januarius's patronage of Naples), and on the Saturday before the first Sunday of May (reunification of his relics).
Naples new Archbishop Domenico Battaglia, 58, the one who prefers sitting on the floor when preaching in a basilica, was appointed on December 12 and installed on Februar 2.
On the rare occasions when the blood remained solid, disasters struck Naples, so in 1528 when the plague devastated the city, in 1939 at the beginning of World War II, in 1943 during the National-Socialist occupation, in 1973 when there was a cholera epidemic, and in 1980 before a terrible earthquake.
This time, the calamity is likely of a spiritual nature and consists in Battaglia's nomination to Naples by Francis. Source
