Swedish schoolgirl who refused to take part in one of campaigner Greta Thunberg's 'climate strikes' is 'bullied by her own teacher' and labelled a 'climate denier'

A Swedish teacher and her students allegedly bullied another pupil when she refused to skip school and participate in a climate protest.   The so-called 'schools strike for climate' movement was started in August 2018 by Greta Thunberg, a 15-year-old Swedish climate activist.    The high school management encouraged its students to take part. All but of one of the students were eager to join in, according to magazine Det Goda Samhället. When the child said she did not wish to participate, the teacher became agitated and lectured her in front of the classroom that she should 'think through her decisions carefully', the magazine says. Laudato Si' Generation rallies Catholic youth for climate strikes 

Hundreds of thousands of youth and young adults across the globe planned to swap classrooms for protests Friday as part of the latest major school strike against inaction by government leaders on climate change.  The second global climate strike, following the first in March that drew an estimated 1.4 million people, will include a growing number of young Catholics through a new youth-centered group called Laudato Si' Generation.  It is one of numerous groups organizing the strikes, which happen to align with the fourth anniversary of the publication date of Pope Francis' encyclical on the environment and human ecology, "Laudato Si', on Care for Our Common Home." (The papal document was officially released June 18, 2015.)  Nearly 1,600 strikes in 118 countries were planned for the day, according to Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swede who sparked the #FridaysForFuture climate strikes when she started her solo protest last August. Since then, she has addressed world leaders, including a brief moment with Pope Francis, who encouraged Thunberg to continue her work for climate action.  Laudato Si' Generation has organized as many as 50 strikes set for May 24. The youth organization is calling on the Catholic Church to become a leader on climate change by developing sustainability plans and committing to reduce its own greenhouse gas emissions that continue to warm the planet.  Source

In the light of Pope Francis' teaching in Laudato Si and reaffirming our commitment to the principles outlined in our 2002 document “The Call of Creation,” the Bishops’ Conference recognises that humanity is in an unprecedented ecological crisis. There is a moral duty to act with urgency and enable the faithful to make informed decisions that care for creation and will assist in repairing the damage.  We therefore urge the Church at all levels to continue to develop initiatives that care for our common home, and to identify individuals and groups to be advocates for this journey. To this end, a position paper has been prepared and further development in its themes is now being undertaken with a view to its approval by the summer 2019.  Source

(ANSA) - Vatican City, May 24 - The Vatican on Friday called on international leaders to listen to the young people in Italy and around the world who staged the latest in a a series of school strikes on Friday calling for action to address the climate crisis. "We need to appeal to political leaders to be far more courageous and to listen to the dramatic cry raised by the scientific community and the climate youth movement," said Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, the prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development. BUBONIC PLAGUE scare puts Mongolia on high alert 

Mongolia is gripped by fears of a pandemic after two Russian tourists died of a highly contagious disease, suspected by authorities to be the Bubonic Plague, also known as the Black Death.

Medical personnel donned hazmat suits and boarded a flight landing in Mongolia’s capital of Ulaanbaatar to intercept passengers who came from the affected region. Eleven passengers were put under “indefinite quarantine” at a nearby hospital.

“Preliminary test results show that bubonic plague likely caused the deaths of the two people,” said Mongolia’s National Emergency Management Agency. “The province’s office has declared an indefinite quarantine” in the Bayan-Ulgii province.

Authorities believe the tourists, a husband and wife visiting from Siberia, were infected after eating contaminated wild game, and estimate the couple came in contact with some 158 people before they died. They, too, have been placed into quarantine.

The male tourist, named in reports only as ‘Citizen T,’ succumbed to extreme illness on April 27, while his pregnant wife passed away three days later.

The likely source of the disease? Marmots.  Marmots are known to carry one of the deadliest forms of the plague bacterium, thought to spread to humans either by parasitic fleas or by consumption of the animal’s meat.

“Despite the fact that eating marmots is banned, Citizen T hunted marmot,” said Dr. N. Tsogbadrakh, director of the National Center for Zoonotic Dermatology and Medicine. “He ate the meat and gave it to his wife, and they died.”   Source

Pope prays for victims of South Africa floods 

Pope Francis asks the faithful to join him in praying for the victims of floods in South Africa. By Linda Bordoni Pope Francis has asked for prayers for “those who have lost their lives or suffered serious damage as a result of the recent floods in South Africa”. He was addressing the pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the Sunday Regina Coeli prayer. “May these brothers and sisters of ours not lack our solidarity as well as the concrete support of the international community” he said. The most deadly floods ever in the area Seventy people reportedly died in floods that ravaged parts of the coastal province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa's southeast. The flooding began on Monday after heavy rain caused mudslides in several towns in Durban, the largest city in KwaZulu-Natal. Authorities warned that there could be more rains in the coming days. Makeshift shelters and food are being provided for those displaced from their homes in the aftermath of the flooding. State-owned broadcaster SABC puts the number of those displaced at over 1000. 100 million people in path of India's worst cyclone in 20 years

New Delhi (CNN)What is expected to be India's strongest tropical cyclone to make landfall in 20 years is barreling toward 100 million people on the country's east coast, prompting officials to begin emergency evacuations.

On Thursday, Tropical Cyclone Fani had strengthened significantly in the Bay of Bengal, with maximum sustained winds of 250 kilometers per hour (155 mph) and gusts of up to 305 kilometers per hour (190 mph), according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

Fani, which is about 60 kilometers (38 miles) off the coast of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha states, is equivalent in intensity to a Category 4 hurricane in the Atlantic, or a supertyphoon in the Pacific. (It's 2 mph away from a Category 5 hurricane, the highest on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.)

It is not expected to make landfall until Friday morning in Odisha, near the city of Puri, but tropical cyclone-force winds are already coming ashore in portions of Andhra Pradesh and along the Odisha coast as well.

With winds expected to be 240 kilometers per hour (150 mph) at landfall, Tropical Cyclone Fani would be the strongest storm to hit the region since a similar system struck Odisha in 1999, resulting in at least 10,000 deaths. Source
