Pope prays for quake-struck Indonesians
Pope Francis expresses his closeness and assures his prayers to all those affected by an earthquake in the Indonesian island of Sulawesi where search and rescue operations are underway. Pope Francis said he is saddened to learn of the tragic loss of life and of the destruction caused by the violent earthquake that has struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.
In a telegram sent on his behalf by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, the Pope expressed his “heartfelt solidarity with all those affected by this natural disaster and said he is praying for the repose of the deceased, the healing of the injured and the consolation of all who grieve.” The 6.2 magnitude earthquake shook Indonesia's Sulawesi island just after midnight Friday. Scores of people have been killed and injured. Authorities are reportedly still collecting information about the full scale of casualties and damage in the affected areas. There were reports of many people trapped in the rubble of collapsed homes and buildings.
The Pope went on to assure the apostolic nuncio in Indonesia and local authorities of his prayers and encouragement to all those involved in the continuing search and rescue efforts. Source
Semeru volcano on Indonesia's Java island spews hot clouds
JAKARTA, Indonesia — Mount Semeru, the highest volcano on Indonesia's most densely populated island of Java, spewed hot clouds as far away as 4.5 kilometers (nearly 3 miles) on Saturday.
There were no immediate evacuations, but the National Disaster Mitigation Agency warned people who live in the villages on the slopes of the 3,676-meter (12,060-foot)-high mountain to be vigilant in looking for signs of danger.
Agency spokesperson Raditya Jati said that people around the river basin on the slopes of the mountain should beware of high rainfall intensity that can trigger lava floods.
Indonesia's Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center did not raise Semeru's alert status, which already had been at the third-highest level since it began erupting in May. The volcano spewed hot ash for 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) in early December, triggering panic among villagers.
Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 250 million people, sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" and is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Government seismologists monitor more than 120 active volcanoes.

Giant sinkhole opens in hospital car park in Naples
A giant sinkhole has opened up in the car park of a hospital in Naples, Italy, forcing the temporary closure of a nearby residence for recovering Covid-19 patients because the electricity was cut.Operations at the Hospital of the Sea were not affected, and firefighters said no one appeared to be injured. The sinkhole consumed a few cars in the hospital’s otherwise empty visitors’ car park on Friday.
The local hospital district said the 20-metre-deep (66ft), 2,000 sq metre (21,527 sq ft) sinkhole opened at dawn. Ennio Aquilino the chief firefighting officer, told the Italian television channel SkyTG 24 the implosion could have been caused by an infiltration of water underground from the recent heavy rains.
News reports quoted the regional governor as saying the Covid-19 residence would reopen within days, after electricity and water services were restored. These services were also interrupted at the hospital, but backup systems allowed care to continue. Source

Doom for Naples?
Naples, huge chasm at the hospital of the sea: terror in Ponticelli
A huge chasm has opened in the internal parking of the hospital of the sea. A hole of 50 meters by 50 and at least 15 meters deep, in which cars have ended up. There would be no casualties or injuries. Firefighters on site Source
An explosion, the causes of which are not yet known, occurred in the night in parking of the Ponticelli Hospital of the Sea, in East Naples. The Covid Residence was evacuated as a precaution. The blast caused a chasm that swallowed several cars. They were not injured, the cars were parked and there were no people inside. Source

A Portuguese health worker has died two days after getting the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine.
Sonia Acevedo, 41, suffered a 'sudden death' at home on New Year's Day 48 hours after receiving the jab. An autopsy is expected to take place later today or tomorrow.
The mother-of-two, who worked in paediatrics at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology in Porto, is not said to have suffered any adverse side-effects after being vaccinated.
Ms Acevedo's father Abilio Acevedo told Portuguese daily Correio da Manha: 'She was okay. She hadn't had any health problems. 'She had the Covid-19 vaccine but she didn't have any symptoms. I don't know what happened. I just want answers.
