Woman killed by feral hogs outside Texas home: ‘One of the worst things I've ever seen’ 

A woman was attacked and killed by a group of feral hogs Sunday morning outside the Southeast Texas home where she worked as a caretaker, authorities said. Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne said in a press conference Monday that Christine Rollins, 59, arrived around 6 to 6:30 a.m. when she was attacked at the Anahuac home, located 40 miles east of Houston. The 84-year-old woman who has been under her care for almost two years went outside and found Rollins in the front yard between her car and the front door, Hawthorne told reporters. He said Rollins had a severe head wound and several other injuries consistent with different sized bites indicating multiple animals were involved. Hawthorne said detectives are still trying to determine if Rollins fell because of a medical condition and the fall caused her head injury, or if the animals made her fall. Source

GODDARD, Kan. (AP) — Authorities have found the owners of a camel, cow and donkey that were spotted roaming together along a Kansas road in a grouping reminiscent of a Christmas Nativity scene. Police in Goddard had asked for help over the weekend in a Facebook post locating the owners of the “three friends traveling together (towards a Northern star).” The post said that if police couldn’t find the owners, they would be “halfway toward a live nativity this Christmas season.” No details were provided about the owners. And no one was immediately available at the police department to answer questions. Amid the search, one poster inquired, “Are there 3 wise looking men near?” Another said, “who knows, they may lead you to the second coming.” Goddard is about 15 miles west of Wichita. Source

Scarier than fiction: climate worry driving 'cli-fi' boom

Paris (AFP) - Imagine a world where storms inundate coastal megacities, entire species become extinct in the blink of an eye, and conflicts are fought over dwindling natural resources.

Not so difficult in 2019, perhaps.

After a year of devastating extreme weather and worldwide unrest over the emergency posed by climate change, topics that used to belong to the realm of science fiction are finding their way into mainstream storytelling.

Back in 2004, Roland Emmerich's disaster flick "The Day After Tomorrow" depicted a global weather catastrophe, with coastal areas devoured by the sea amid general meteorological mayhem.

Just 15 years on, scenes from the movie resemble images taken from real-life weather events today.

And as climate change makes superstorms, flooding, wildfires and droughts more likely, a new genre is gaining fatalistic fans the world over: "Cli-fi".

"It's catching on like wildfire," said US writer and cli-fi aficionado Dan Bloom.

He credited US President Donald Trump, who has said he will withdraw from the Paris climate deal, with helping promote the genre.

"There's a lot of people who say that climate change is not real," said Bloom. "These people are making the rest of us very angry and as a result cli-fi is getting more and more power."

Andrew Milner, a professor of comparative literature at Melbourne's Monash University, said that cli-fi was yet to break out from sci-fi's yoke -- most people get into the new genre because they like the old one.

"Both its texts and practitioners -- writers, readers, publishers, film directors, fans -- relate primarily to the science-fiction tradition," he said.

"(But) it is very clear that the sub-genre has grown very rapidly in recent years."

- Global appeal -

Global protest movements such as the Youth Strike for Climate and Extinction Rebellion have heightened public awareness of the issue.

For J.R. Burgmann, co-author of "Science Fiction and Climate Change: A Sociological Approach", cli-fi films and novels are a logical expression of an increasingly knowledgeable and concerned society.

"This rise is a response to real-world concerns," he said. "And though I would argue that literature has been rather slow to respond to manmade climate change, it certainly appears to be making up for lost time."

And, because climate change is a truly global problem, cli-fi has become a worldwide, multi-lingual phenomenon.

In France, two major television series focussing on dystopian but conceivable futures have received popular and critical acclaim.

"The Last Wave" tells the story of 10 surfers who go missing in bad weather. When they return they can't remember what happened but some have strange new powers.

And "The Collapse", set in a post-apocalyptic world where fuel is scarce, nuclear sites are threatened and medicines are rationed, debuted this week.

Recent cli-fi works from around the world include "Blackout Island" by Icelandic author Sigridur Hagalin Bjornsdottir, a Canadian adaptation of Jean Hegland's "Into the Forest" and "Water Knife", by US author Paolo Bacigalupi.

In "The History of Bees", Norwegian author Maja Lunde's 2017 bestseller, humanity is forced to pollinate their crops by hand after pesticides have wiped insects off the face of the Earth.

"People are more and more worried about climate change and authors write about what scares them," Lunde told AFP last year.

- 'Hard to ignore' -

Novels and films about climate change are nothing new, of course.

J.G. Ballard's "The Burning World" (1964) and John Brunner's "The Sheep Look Up" (1972) depicted a world ravaged by environmental damage decades before scientists fully understood manmade climate change.

Even John Steinbeck's generational "The Grapes of Wrath" (1939) is essentially a tale of the harrowing ordeal undergone by climate migrants from the Oklahoma dust bowl.

But, as leading cli-fi author Jean-Marc Ligny explained, greater public awareness and a seemingly unending string of drought, wildfires and heatwaves have made climate a topic that's "hard to ignore".

"Climate change needs stories, and readers need them to be told," he said. "There are figures, statistics, but these don't really say anything. Cli-fi makes people more aware of the situation." Source

Two people diagnosed with pneumonic plague in China 

Two people in China have been diagnosed with plague, the latest cases of a disease more commonly associated with historical catastrophe. Plague is caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis and can arise in three forms – a lung infection, known as pneumonic plague; a blood infection, known as septicemic plague; and a form that affects the lymph nodes, called bubonic plague. The latter form is perhaps the most famous, and was behind several pandemics including the Black Death of the late middle ages, which is estimated to have killed up to 60% of the European population. The two new cases being treated at a hospital in Beijing are of the pneumonic form, which is even more serious than bubonic plague. Source

Woman, 95, dies in dog attack at home of animal activist 

SUFFIELD, Conn. (AP) — A 95-year-old Connecticut woman has died from injuries she suffered when she was attacked by a dog at the home of a former lawmaker who is also an animal rights activist.  Authorities say Janet D'Aleo, of Enfield, was found with life-threatening injuries Wednesday and brought to a Massachusetts hospital.  Police say D'Aleo was visiting a home in Suffield when she was bitten. The address disclosed by police is the same address as the home of animal rights activist and former state Rep. Annie Hornish.  Authorities say the 4-year-old male pit bull and pointer mix has been quarantined, pending further investigation.  Suffield Police Chief Richard Brown says officers will investigate the dog's background and what prompted the attack.  He says the Hornish family had the dog for several months and police hadn't received any complaints.  Source

Terrifying video shows the moment a man was attacked by a pack of dogs in northwest Miami-Dade. The incident happened Tuesday outside a home in the 1100 block of Northwest 103rd Street and involved five bulldogs, Miami-Dade Animal Services officials said. Family members said the man, Jaques Notis, was coming home from work when the five dogs attacked him. He was taken to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery and received a blood transfusion. The surveillance footage showed the man walking on a sidewalk when the dogs moved in and knocked him to the ground. The video showed the man trying to beat the dogs away as he rolled on the ground before witnesses tried to help him. Source
