The stunning eruption of Etna that occurred on August 23 comes after two years of sleep of one of the most active volcanoes in the world. A powerful earthquake has shaken the Caribbean, rocking Venezuela all the way through to Trinidad.  A powerful earthquake has shaken eastern Venezuela through to Trinidad, causing buildings to be evacuated in the capital of Caracas.   The quake has been placed at a 7.3 magnitude with its epicenter being 13 miles southwest of Irapa, the U.S. Geological Survey says.  The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said a tsunami was possible within nearly 200 miles of the earthquake epicentre, which could hit Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, although the warnings were lifted at 6.12pm local time.  Source

Sixty nine major earthquakes hit the Pacific's Ring of Fire in just 48 hours driving fears that the 'Big One' is about to hit California

Fears that a deadly earthquake may soon hit California have emerged after a swarm of quakes rocked one of Earth's major geological disaster zones.  Sixteen 'significant' tremors - those at magnitude 4.5 or above - shook the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' on Monday, following a spate of 53 that hit the region Sunday.  The quakes rattled Indonesia, Bolivia, Japan and Fiji, but failed to reach the western coast of the United States, which also falls along the infamous geological ring.  The tremors have raised concerns that California's 'Big One' - a destructive earthquake of magnitude 8 or greater - may be looming.  Scientists have previously warned that the state, which straddles the huge San Andreas Fault Line, is long overdue a deadly event of this size.

The endangered orca who has been clinging onto her dead calf for more than two weeks and swimming for 1,000 miles, has finally let go of her baby. The 20-year-old mother, known as J35 or Tahlequah, broke the hearts of watchers across the globe who were touched by the story of the grieving whale. On Saturday she was spotted looking 'vigorous and healthy' following 17 days of swimming with her dead calf on her forehead in the Haro Strait off of the Washington coast. 'J35 frolicked past my window today with other J pod whales, and she looks vigorous and healthy,' Ken Balcomb, founding director of the Center for Whale Research, said to The Seattle Times. Source

Montgomery County Sheriff Chris Watkins released this statement Friday, August 10.

On Thursday, August 9, 2018, a resident of a Lake Tillery development on the western side of Montgomery County went missing while taking her daily walk. After several hours the 66 year old female did not return home. Her husband called neighbors and friends who searched the area. They were unable to locate her and call 911. Sheriff’s deputies and search and rescue were sent to the scene. Within hours she was discovered deceased on the side of an unused road within the development. An investigation was conducted with the assistance of the Medical Examiner’s Office, NC Wildlife Resources Commission and Animal Control. The investigation revealed she had been attacked by dogs. Law enforcement searched the neighborhood and located two pit bull dogs with physical evidence reflecting the dog’s involvement. The animals were taken into custody by Animal Control and are being quarantined. The owner of the dogs is cooperating with officials and the matter is still under investigation and review by the District Attorney’s Office. The name of the victim is being withheld until family members can be notified. The victim is being sent to the NC Medical Examiner’s Office in Raleigh for an autopsy. “This is a very tragic event, which has deeply affected the family, friends, deputies and first responders, our thoughts and prayers are being extended to all.” Source

Potential College Lake Dam failure spurs evacuations in Lynchburg, Virginia

The situation at the College Lake Dam, located in Lynchburg, Virginia, has stabilized for the time being, officials said shortly before 1 p.m. Friday. However, the potential for renewed heavy rain on Friday is prompting concerns for more flooding. "Officials have reported that flooding over Lakeside Drive has ended and that water is holding within the shores of College Lake," according to a statement from the National Weather Service. Late Thursday into Friday, water was overflowing the top of the dam and officials said it on was the brink of failure due to recently heavy rainfall. If the dam fails, portions of Lynchburg could flood within minutes. Lynchburg is located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, about 50 miles east of Roanoke. "Lynchburg received 1.35 inches of rain on Thursday and 1.64 inches so far this month," AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Rathbun said. Source

BOISE -- A herd of goats caused a stir Friday morning after they escaped their enclosure and went on a snacking tour through a West Boise neighborhood. Residents say the 118 adult and baby goats first showed up on Summerwind Drive off of Five Mile Road at about 7 a.m. Ben Dunn said he found out about the goat invasion when his mother rousted him from his bed."My mom was shaking me up like crazy, and she was like 'Ben, come outside!' and I was like 'what, what?'" he said. "I looked out, and I was like, 'oh dang.'"The hungry herd moved from lawn to lawn, chewing down grass, munching on rosebushes and stripping low-hanging branches bare. "Half the neighborhood's lawn has been cut - I mean, mowing for free!" Dunn said. "It's kind of funny to see them in the road a ton, like not even caring about the cars." The goats quickly attracted a crowd, as neighbors emerged to snap photos and pet the friendly goats. A two-year-old boy was attacked and mauled to death by three pit bulls inside his family's home in Philadelphia. The vicious attack took place at around 5pm on Wednesday in a two-story row house located in the 3000 block of Agate Street in Philadelphia's Port Richmond section. Man who lost ALL his limbs after a dog licked his leg faces three more surgeries to survive - despite already enduring seven operations

The Wisconsin man who lost all his limbs to a severe infection - caught from a dog licking his leg - still faces at least three more operations in a desperate bid to survive. Greg Manteufel, 48, has already endured seven surgeries since he was hospitalized since late June, when he went to a Milwaukee-area hospital with flu-like symptoms. On Thursday, his wife Dawn shared a picture of Greg looking forlorn in his hospital bed with a blackened nose - but insisted he was in good spirits. She said her husband was looking forward to being fitted for prosthetic limbs. Source
