Magnitude 6.2 earthquake strikes off NorCal coast: USGS
A magnitude 6.2 earthquake was recorded off the coast of Northern California early Monday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The temblor, which hit around 12:10 p.m., was centered in the Pacific Ocean, about 24 miles west of Petrolia and 44 miles southwest of Eureka, according to USGS. Multiple aftershocks with magnitudes in the 2.5 and 4.0 range are impacting the area, state officials say. There were no immediate reports of any injuries or damage. The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services is “actively monitoring” the situation, according to a tweet from the agency. The quake’s preliminary magnitude was measured at 5.8 before it was upgraded by the Geological Survey a short time later. Shaking was felt throughout the northern part of the state and as far south as the Bay Area, USGS’s website showed. “Moderate to strong shaking was recorded by the seismic network along the coast. 375 people are confirmed dead after 168mph Typhoon Rai battered the Philippines, leaving many survivors pleading for food and water
The death toll following the strongest typhoon to batter the Philippines this year has risen to a total of 375, with 52 other people still missing and several central towns and provinces grappling with downed communications and power outages and pleading for food and water, officials said Monday. At its strongest, Typhoon Rai packed sustained winds of 121 miles per hour and gusts of up to 168 mph before it blew out Friday into the South China Sea. At least 375 people were killed, 52 remained missing and 239 were injured, according to the national police. The toll was expected to increase because several towns and villages remained out of reach due to downed communications and power outages although massive clean-up and repair efforts were underway. Many died due to falling trees and collapsing walls, flash flood and landslides. A 57-year-old man was found dead hanging from a tree branch and a woman was blown away by the wind and died in Negros Occidental province, police said.Governor Arlene Bag-ao of Dinagat Islands, among the southeastern provinces first hit by the typhoon, said Rai's ferocity on her island province of more than 130,000 was worse than that of Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful and deadliest typhoons on record and which devastated the central Philippines in November 2013 but did not inflict any casualties in Dinagat.
'If it was like being in a washing machine before, this time there was like a huge monster that smashed itself everywhere, grabbed anything like trees and tin roofs and then hurled them everywhere,' Bag-ao said. 'The wind was swirling north to south to east and west repeatedly for six hours. Some tin roof sheets were blown away then were tossed back.' At least 14 villagers died and more than 100 others were injured by flying tin roofs, debris and glass shards and were treated in makeshift surgery rooms in damaged hospitals in Dinagat, Bag-ao said. Many more would have died if thousands of residents had not been evacuated from high-risk villages. Like several other typhoon-hit provinces, Dinagat remained without electricity and communications and many residents in the province, where the roofs of most houses and buildings were ripped off, needed construction materials, food and water. A World Health Organization (WHO) taskforce has been sent to South Sudan to investigate an unidentified illness which has killed 89 people. The country's ministry of health reported that an unknown disease had killed scores of people in the northern town of Fangak in Jonglei state. The WHO sent a rapid response team of scientists to the area, which is one of the worst hit by recent severe flooding, to collect samples from sick people, reports the BBC. Local health officials in Fangak said initial samples from the sick returned negative results for cholera. We decided to send a rapid response team to go and do risk assessment and investigation; that is when they will be able to collect samples from the sick people - but provisionally the figure that we got was that there were 89 deaths,' Sheila Baya, from the WHO, told the BBC. Baya said the team of scientists had to reach Fangak via a helicopter due to severe flooding in the area, adding that the group are waiting for transport to return them to the capital Juba on Wednesday. In the bordering state of Unity, severe floods have increased the spread of diseases such as malaria and caused malnutrition in children due to food shortages, Lam Tungwar Kueigwong, the state's minister of land, housing and public utilities, said. Oil from the fields in the region had contaminated the water, he said, leading to the death of domestic animals. The flooding in the north of South Sudan has cut off communities from accessing supplies of food and other vital commodities. Source

At least 50 are killed by tornadoes in Kentucky's deadliest storm in a century: Twisters rip through Mississippi Valley 'shredding' nursing home and destroying Amazon warehouse
At least 50 people are thought to have been killed in Kentucky, and there are multiple fatalities at an Amazon distribution center in Illinois, after at least 24 tornadoes ripped across the South and Midwest of the US on Friday. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear estimated the toll would 'exceed 50' but could reach 100 after 'some of the worst tornado damage' the state has experienced 'in a long time'.
'This has been one of the toughest nights in Kentucky history and some areas have been hit in ways that is hard to put into words,' Beshear told a news conference early on Saturday. 'I fear that there are more than 50 dead in Kentucky... probably closer to somewhere between 70 and 100, it's devastating.'
The governor added the damage was 'some of the worst we've seen in a long time' in the town of Mayfield, a small city of about 10,000 people in the far western part of Kentucky, where the Bluegrass State borders Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas.
Beshear said 'dozens' were believed killed in a Mayfield candle factory where 110 were working when the storm hit. The early casualty estimates suggest that the tragedy is the deadliest tornado strike in Kentucky in more than a century, on a scale last seen in 1917 when twisters killed 67 in the western tip of the state.
One tornado among the dozens that struck is estimated to have a damage path of more than 200 miles, which would approach or exceed the all-time record.
Beshear has declared a state of emergency and requested an immediate federal disaster declaration. A spokeswoman for the state's emergency management service said that rescue officials had not confirmed figures for deaths or injuries as of early Saturday.
Elsewhere, in southern Illinois, authorities said at least two were dead and up to 50 people were trapped after a roof collapsed at an Amazon warehouse near St. Louis late on Friday, when tornadoes and strong storms blew through the area.
At least two were killed and five were injured when a tornado shredded the roof of a nursing home in Monette in northern Arkansas and another person killed in Missouri.
A further three people were killed in the severe weather in Tennessee, Dean Flener, spokesman for the state's Emergency Management Agency said. Source

Illinois: 'Mass casualty incident' after Amazon warehouse roof collapses 'with 100 staff working inside'
Emergency crews in the US state of Illinois are responding to reports of injuries at an Amazon warehouse after the roof collapsed following bad weather.
Footage from local TV stations showed dozens of emergency vehicles at the Amazon centre near Edwardsville, about 25 miles west of St Louis.
Some 100 employees were believed to have been working the night shift at the time of the collapse, an official told local TV station KTVI-TV.
It was not immediately clear if or how many people were hurt, but the Collinsville, Illinois, Emergency Management Agency called it a "mass casualty incident" on Facebook.The centre opened with two warehouses in 2016, with 1.5 million square feet of space, according to the Belleville News-Democrat.

The warehouses are used to store items, before then being shipped to mail-order customers.
It comes after severe weather - including a thunderstorm and a tornado - ripped through the wider St Louis area. Source

Hundreds of dead birds mysteriously fell from the sky in Spain
More than 200 dead starlings dropped from the sky in Ferrol, Spain and nobody knows why. The strange event occurred on November 26 near the Juan Cardona Hospital. From Coast to Coast:
A mystified witness to the nightmarish scene[…] indicated that the birds "came out of the trees in the emergency area of the hospital," briefly took to the sky, and then just as quickly fell to the ground.
An official with the city told a local media outlet that "The birds have been collected and we are now waiting to find out what happened," but cautioned that "we are told it won't be easy."
A similar thing happened last year near Tarragona, Spain and, according to reports, may have been related to pollution from petrochemical plants in the area. Source

Jesus replies to John: “let all righteousness be fulfilled” (cf. Mt 3:15). To baptize a child is an act of justice towards them. Why? Because at Baptism we offer a treasure, at Baptism we offer a pledge: the Holy Spirit. Baptism endows the child with the strength of the Holy Spirit: the Spirit that will defend and assist each of them throughout life. This is why it is so important to baptize them when they are little, so that they may grow with the strength of the Holy Spirit.
This is the message that I would like to give you today. You have brought your children today [so that they may receive] the Holy Spirit within them. And make sure that they develop in the light, with the strength of the Holy Spirit through catechesis, assistance, education and your example at home.... This is the message.
I do not want to say anything more important than this. Only some advice. Children are not accustomed to come to the Sistine chapel. It is their first time! They are not used to being closed in an environment that is also a bit stifling. And they are not used to being dressed like this, for a feast day as beautiful as today. They will feel a bit uncomfortable at times. And one will start [to cry]... — the concert has yet to begin! — but one will start then another ... Do not be alarmed: let your children cry and scream. Rather, if your child cries and complains, perhaps it is because it feels too hot: remove something; or because it is hungry: breastfeed him, here, yes, always comfortably. Something I also said last year: they have a “choral” dimension: it is enough for one of them to start to “sing” and everyone follows and there will be a concert. Do not be alarmed. It is a beautiful homily when a baby cries in church. It is a beautiful homily. Make sure that they are all right and let us move forward.

A record-breaking 105 US children have died from flu so far this season
It has been an "unusual" flu season with a higher proportion of children and young adults affected than the older population, according to Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
The earlier prevalence of influenza B -- a flu strain that tends to be more common in children -- could be a reason why more children were affected, Schaffner said. Also, as the number of influenza B cases decreased, the number of H1N1 cases increased, he said. H1N1 is a subtype of the influenza A strain, which also affects children more than adults.
"This is the first time in 25 years where [influenza B] became so common so early," said Dr. Buddy Creech, an associate professor of pediatric infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Neither Schaffner nor Creech know why this year's influenza timeline is so different.

British Funeral Director: Dead Babies Are Piling Up in Morgues
During an interview with Resistance GB, Wesley, who has been a funeral director for over three years, speaks about his experience throughout the so-called “pandemic” and what he’s been seeing in the morgues in recent times. He says he’s currently seeing untold numbers of dead babies and new-borns in cold storage and piling up in mortuaries waiting for their funerals.
The unprecedented numbers of babies that he and other morticians are dealing with are matched only by the excessive number of younger people in their 30s and 40s who have been dying since the Covid injection rolled out, he says.
When the pandemic first began the mortuaries saw a flurry of deaths which, in a few months, calmed down, even though media continued to hype Covid deaths. There was an uptick in suicides in the summer of 2020 in mostly younger men, but when autumn 2020 came, everything was rather quiet.
And then, he said, “Come January [2021] the numbers were going through the roof … and that’s since people were being vaccinated.” Now he’s having the most funerals he’s ever seen in a period of two weeks, and in younger people, he’s averaging about 12 “in one go,” when before the Covid injection he would see only “four or five funerals going, not 12, and not all in that age group.”
And now, he says, what he’s seeing is a lot of new-born babies … “really high, about 30” when he’s used to seeing only three or four. In other words, about 10 times the number of new born babies are dying than he normally would see — so many they’re having to keep them in the adult section, where there’s more room. “Obviously they’re either miscarried or full-term births, but not a lot is being said about it,” he says.
To put the causes of deaths in perspective, he says he’s only had one Covid death this year. All the rest are myocarditis, infarctions (heart attacks) and some pneumonia. He also notes that “anybody and everybody” who died when the pandemic started was marked as Covid on their death certificates, but that’s not happening since the Covid injection was introduced.
