Mystery over death of 50 whales found washed up on beach
Tourists on a helicopter sightseeing tour spotted dozens of dead whales on a remote beach in Iceland. Reykjavik Helicopters pilot David Schwarzhans said he and his passengers counted around 50 long-finned pilot whales washed up on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula in western Iceland on Thursday. Schwarzhans said ‘there might have been more’ as some ‘were already buried in sand’. He intended to show the visitors the animals and the beauty spot but was met with what he described as a ‘very sad scene’. Schwarzhans added that they were concentrated in one spot, but has no idea how they became beached. The whales are believed to have swum ashore at the same time and died of dehydration. The pilot whale is notorious for stranding in mass numbers, for reasons that are not entirely understood.
